Samsung’s Galaxy Note series flagship machine, relying on the large screen and S Pen stylus, has made a fortune in the market. However, industry analysts speculate that with the advent of foldable panel phones, the Samsung Note series has lost market segmentation. This year’s Samsung Note 20 may be the last masterpiece of this series.
The Korea Times reported at the new product launch event on August 5, Samsung launched the Note 20 and the foldable panel phone “Galaxy Z Fold 2″”. Analysts predict that starting next year, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold folding phones will be equipped with S Pen, and there may not be a new Note model by then. SK Securities analyst Lee Dong-Joo said: “After the next-generation Z Fold has an S Pen stylus, there may not be a new Note machine next year.””
Another reason they hold this view is that the Galaxy S20 has a built-in Time of Flight (ToF) sensor, but the Samsung Note 20 does not support it. They think this is because the Note 20 will not have a follow-up new machine. Proof Lee pointed out that, compared to the Samsung S20, Note 20 has no ToF and the camera function is degraded. The S20 lens can zoom 50 times, and the S20 Ultra can zoom 100 times. ToF allows smartphone cameras to detect distances and capture 3D images with infrared rays.
Outsiders speculate that Samsung’s dual-track strategy for smartphones may be changed to the Galaxy S and Z Flip series models with panels folded up and down in the first half of the year, and the Z Fold series with panels folded in half in the second half. The industry is optimistic that the purchase of foldable mobile phones will increase. Strategy Analytics predicts that the sales of foldable mobile phones will rise from 1 million in 2019 to 100 million in 2025.
Counterpoint: Note 20 sales may drop by 500,000
Yonhap News Agency reported that the research institute predicted that under the impact of the epidemic, the sales of Samsung’s “Galaxy Note 20” series may be 500,000 less than the previous generation Note 10.
Samsung held an online new product launch event, revealing the Note 20, the new folding mobile phone “Galaxy Z Fold 2”, and the smartwatch “Galaxy Watch 3”. Counterpoint Research estimates that Note 20’s first-year sales of 8.5 million units will be 500,000 units less than the previous generation Note 10. Counterpoint pointed out that the epidemic is bad for buying. Interviews by the agency show that 30% of consumers will cut their smartphone spending by at least 20%.
However, folding phones are expected to perform well. Counterpoint predicts that by the end of this year, 500,000 Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be sold, 100,000 more than the first-year sales of the previous Galaxy Fold. Galaxy Fold came out in September last year and was sold in 60 countries around the world at the end of 2019. However, panel and hinge problems caused a shortage of Galaxy Fold supply.
